Where and how to find your CSGO config (updated 2021)
Valve changed the default location for player’s configs sometime back. Previously, it was defaulted to:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\csgo\cfg.
You can still use this, as it is still present, however with the change your csgo config location is now here as well:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\STEAMID\730\local\cfg
It's pretty simple but can be confusing for inexperienced players so, read further if you need some help.
Do the CSGO config locations matter?
If you stick with the original default location, this config file will essentially be the master source. It will override any config settings placed in the userdata folder so, if you have multiple accounts you want to share config settings with on the same PC, keep your config file here. This placement, if you uninstall, will delete your config file so make sure you save it elsewhere in case something happens.
If you do not want to share files between accounts, as well as keep it saved without risk of being deleted, place it in the userdata folder. Additionally, if your CSGO practice config or autoexec file doesn’t work, you’ll know it is in the right place at the very least.
How do I get to my CSGO config files?
To find and access your custom CSGO configurations, here is the process step by step for either location.
For the master config file location
- Open Steam, right-click on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and click "Manage"
- Click on “BROWSE LOCAL FILES"
- In the new window explorer folder, open “csgo” and then the “cfg” folder.
For the userdata config file location
- Open Steam, right-click on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and click "Manage"
- Click on “BROWSE LOCAL FILES"
- In the new window explorer folder, you’ll see a list of files.
Again here, Steam has opened the Counter-Strike install folder, but this is not where the "userdata" folder is. Right above the list of files is a file path that will look this:
- This PC > Local Disk > Program Files (86x) > Steam > Steamapps > common > Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
Click "Steam." This is where the "userdata" folder is so find the "userdata" folder and open it.
"Userdata" may look similar to mine as shown above. Each folder is labeled with a number, and that number happens to be a Steam Account's unique SteamID.
Dependent on how many folders you see, what you do next will be either of the following:
- If there is only one folder
- You’re in luck, go ahead and click on it. You’re where you need to be and you’re now able to edit your config file(s).
- If you have more than one file like I do, well you’ll need to know your SteamID.
- Find/remember your SteamID
- Follow this file pathing
- SteamID > 730 > local > cfg
How do I find my SteamID
So, if you're like me, I didn't even realize this change occurred and I needed to find my SteamID as well. Well it turns out, the easiest way to find your SteamID is to:
- Open Steam and navigate to your profile's Inventory
- Click the blue "Trade Offers" button in the upper right-hand corner
- Scroll down to "Third-Party Sites" by "Who can send me Trade Offers"
- You’ll see a URL here. The number between "?partner=" and "#&token" is your SteamID.
- Write down the Steam ID and head back to your "userdata" folder.
Once you’ve found your corresponding folder labeled with your SteamID, follow the pathing below:
- SteamID > 730 > local > cfg
Now that you’ve found your config file, you can edit your file and customize your gameplay. If you need help creating and using an autoexec config file, well you’re in luck we’ve covered that as well.
